In recent years, feminist reflections on the role of law in reinforcing gender roles have grown. The role of criminalization as a strategy for the defense of women’s rights has also been questioned. For this reason, we believed that a space for an exchange between feminist lawyers and activists was necessary. The objective of that space was to share critical perspectives on the use of criminal law as a strategy for the defense of sexual and reproductive rights and gender equality. We wanted to reflect on what we are reinforcing when we promote the use of criminal law to protect our rights and what are the impacts of this strategy. Additionally, we wanted this space to reimagine our role as lawyers and social justice activists. This dialogue will provide the opportunity for ideas to be heard and developed further regarding courses of action beyond criminalization.
