Who we are?

RESURJ is a transnational global south led membership-based alliance of feminist activists under the age of 40 grounded in national and regional social justice movements working across generations, constituencies, and identities who seek to realize sexual and reproductive justice for all. Key to this is the meaningful participation of younger feminists in shaping and advocating for transparent, accountable and sustainable development policies and programs. Our justice approach encompasses an understanding of and a commitment to addressing the inter-linkages between our bodies, our health, and our human rights in the context of the ecological, economic and social crises of our times.

Role Description

RESURJ is looking for an intern to support the Alliance’s engagement with the upcoming United High-Level Meeting (UN HLM) on Universal Health Coverage. The various activities that will culminate in the HLM in September at the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, will take place from April – October 2019, primarily in New York. The Intern will work with RESURJ’s Executive Coordinator to track, participate in informal UN negotiations and multi-stakeholder hearings, and provide feedback to RESURJ’s membership. This will support the alliance’s mobilization and advocacy efforts to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights in the context of the UN HLM.

This internship is a great opportunity for someone in the health field and who is interested in advocacy for the right to health, in particular, sexual and reproductive health and rights and seeks experience policy advocacy, particularly in global UN spaces.

The theme of the HLM-UHC is ‘Universal Health Coverage: Moving Together to Build a Healthier World.’ This UN HLM is linked to the follow-up and review of the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular, Goal 3 on Health and it is aimed to mobilize high-level government support and sustain health investments. During the preparatory process, UN member states will be negotiating a political declaration on Universal Health Coverage, which should identify priorities and commitments to achieve UHC by 2030.

Possible projects and responsibilities to complete during the internship:

– Track discussions from various partners and UN agencies on components of the UHC

conference; such as online consultations, in-person meeting and conference calls – Develop briefs to inform RESURJ members’ engagement – Collaborate with RESURJ members to develop key messages and facts sheets related to UHC, SHRH and the 2030 Agenda

– Gather relevant analysis from RESURJ member countries – Attend meetings at the UN Headquarters in New York, related to the UHC High-Level Meeting

Knowledge and skills required:

– Proactive, fast learner, with knowledge of global health policy, and the right to health – Some experience/knowledge of health-related, in particular, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, advocacy processes and spaces – Familiar with of key elements within UHC such as quality of services, equity in access to health services etc – An understanding of the UN and related human rights bodies – Strong writing skills

An ideal intern would be:

– A passionate feminist with knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and rights – Independent and self-reliant, flexible, proactive and creative – Ability to work effectively with diverse team spread across different global regions – Able to commit about 15 hours per week from April to October 2019- this will include

remote working, attending some face to face meetings and UN HQ in New York City

Remuneration: This Internship is not a paid position, although a small stipend and travel reimbursement is available to assist with cost incurred related to fulfilling the Internship
